Marner Day of Play

Monday 20 July 2026

Build what Poplar could look like in 2040 — something that would help the community. Each class takes a type of building or space, builds it from junk, and together the pieces form one shared vision of future Poplar.

The sensory wall

Nursery (Inspire) and Thrive build the same project: a cardboard sensory wall of holes and nooks holding things to move, touch, hear and see — Nursery leaning towards play and fine motor, Thrive towards sensory experiences. Each class makes their own in their own room, at their own pace.

The two walls can be joined afterwards into one larger wall — best somewhere calm, rather than the busy hall.

Poplar today

Real places children know — the starting point for imagining 2040.

Imagine the future

Ideas from cities being dreamed up around the world — to spark what Poplar could become.

Objectives

  • Ensure teachers and children have dedicated time in the school day to benefit from creative play.
  • Allow time for children to explore junk modelling techniques in hands-on activities at their own pace, and discuss what makes a community.
  • Design and create models of buildings to be displayed as part of their vision for Poplar in 2040 in the school hall.
  • Reflect in the exhibition on their creations, listening to others and sharing their experience.

Resources

In addition to this guide, we will share with you:

Logistics

This is just a suggested guide, so please feel free to adapt it however you feel would work best for your class (e.g. you may want to shorten the exploration time, move it to another day, or extend building). We'd love your feedback on what worked best for your class.

As part of Time to Explore, we would like children to… …so you could
Think about what makes a community
  • Discuss how people in the community use the specific building or vehicle — what do they want? What are the challenges they might face, and how could you help fix these?
Think about the future
  • What do you think the future will look like? What might the challenges be in the future?
Develop their junk modelling skills further to help them bring their ideas to life
  • Use our suggested slide deck for the teacher to demonstrate each one with the whole class.
  • Get children to try out the techniques before building their creations.

Back-up activities

There will be some free time in the afternoon — and some classes finish early — so please have a couple of things ready. You could:

Reflect on the build

Talk through how the making went:

What worked well? What didn't?
Were there any problems to solve along the way?
Did the design match the finished creation? If not, why?
Who would use their building or space?

Add to the model city

Design and make extra features for the exhibition:

People Cars Animals Nature

If you have any questions or ideas, please contact Liber at liber@instituteofimagination.org.

Who's helping on the day

You'll see a few familiar and new faces around the school:

Jen & Liber

Roving around the school all day to sort anything that comes up — grab us if you need something.

James, Emma & Muireann

With Year 6, running the micro:bits.

Jean

Leading on impact — talking with staff, children and families about the difference the day makes.

LEGO volunteers

Around seven extra pairs of hands, helping out in classes.

Gabriela — Ecorys (evaluation). Ecorys are independently evaluating the Power of Play in Tower Hamlets programme and visiting each project in person across June and July. Gabriela will observe a session and have short, informal chats (10–15 minutes) with 2–5 families and 1–2 members of delivery staff to learn more about the activities.

People and roles to be confirmed with Jen.
